Salas Capitulares medievales / Medieval Chapter Houses

 

Dentro de los diferentes estadios o elementos que componían los imponentes y elaborados monasterios medievales, que, por su concepción y grandeza, podría decirse que conformaban pequeñas ‘ciudades’ en sí mismos, destacaban, por su soberana grandeza, los Capítulos o Salas Capitulares, donde la congregación monástica dirimía todas las cuestiones relativas al monasterio y la vida de los monjes residentes, así como aquellas otras, que, políticamente hablando, pudieran también afectarles, pues no hay que olvidar que el poder inherente al estamento eclesial estaba en la cima de la pirámide social de la época.

Pero las Salas Capitulares, curiosamente, eran también pequeños cementerios en potencia, donde no sólo sus muros acogían, en muchos casos, elaborados sarcófagos cuya riqueza escultural constituye, por añadidura, un verdadero tesoro antropológico de usos y costumbres, sino que, además, su suelo formaba también los nichos o sepulturas que constituían la morada eterna de abades y caballeros relevantes de la época, en cuyas lápidas, se denota un curioso simbolismo, no exento, en muchos casos, de esotérico misterio, que implica todo un fascinante reto a descubrir.

But the Chapter Houses, curiously, were also potential small cemeteries, where not only their walls housed, in many cases, elaborate sarcophagi whose sculptural wealth constitutes, in addition, a true anthropological treasure of uses and customs, but, in addition, their The ground also formed the niches or graves that constituted the eternal home of relevant abbots and knights of the time, whose tombstones denote a curious symbolism, not exempt, in many cases, of esoteric mystery, which implies a fascinating challenge to discover.
